Project PRISM
Overcoming the AI Memory Wall with Multiplier-Free Computing
Executive Summary
The artificial intelligence industry is colliding with a hard physical ceiling: The Memory and Energy Wall.
Today, state-of-the-art foundation models rely on continuous floating-point matrix multiplications distributed across thousands of high-power datacenter accelerators. Even modest language models demand gigabytes of high-bandwidth memory and hundreds of watts of power simply to move weights across digital buses. As context lengths grow, expanding memory caches choke consumer devices and edge hardware, centralizing advanced AI behind capital-intensive cloud infrastructure.
Today, Mage’s Guild Psychonautics LLC announces the completion of a series of foundational milestones under our initiative, Project PRISM:
1. Multiplier-Free Conversational AI: We successfully converted Google’s Gemma 2 2B Instruct foundation model into a proprietary, multiplier-free execution format. The deployment achieved a 73.0% reduction in total packaged model footprint (dropping from 5.23 GB to 1.41 GB) and an 81.3% reduction in raw weight storage, maintaining fully coherent, multi-turn technical and conversational dialogue in 3.27 GB of VRAM on a standard laptop GPU — with zero floating-point hardware matrix multiplications.
2. Physical Silicon Verification: On standard reconfigurable FPGA silicon, our physical processing core closed timing cleanly at ambient room temperature (300 K) using zero hardware DSP multipliers, delivering a 10,871x speedup and a verified 2,170,000x energy efficiency gain over classical simulated annealing baselines.
3. High-Complexity Landscape Traversal: On the benchmark frustrated energy spike gauntlet (formalized by researchers at USC and Google) — an optimization problem requiring over 10¹⁷ years for classical supercomputers to resolve and where cryogenic quantum processors freeze out due to thermal noise — Project PRISM converged to the exact ground state in 0.492 milliseconds on an entry-level laptop GPU.
4. Constant-Memory Context: We empirically demonstrated that the expanding memory overhead of traditional transformer architectures can be replaced with a proprietary, fixed-size continuous state, enabling long-horizon context with zero sequence-length memory growth.
I. The Problem: The Silicon Scaling Bottleneck
Every token generated by a modern foundation model requires reading billions of weights from memory and evaluating them through power-hungry multiply-accumulate hardware. This introduces three critical industry bottlenecks:
- The Bandwidth Tax: Up to 80% of accelerator power is dissipated simply transferring weights between memory and compute cores, generating massive thermal overhead.
- Silicon Inefficiency: Dedicated hardware multipliers occupy substantial physical die area, limiting the compute density achievable on edge devices, autonomous systems, and low-power hardware.
- The Hardware Divide: Traditional compression techniques frequently cause severe degradation in model reasoning when pushed below 4 bits, locking capable models out of consumer-grade hardware.
Project PRISM addresses this bottleneck at the foundational level of numerical execution.
II. The Innovation: The PRISM Execution Architecture
Rather than relying on continuous, high-precision floating-point arithmetic, Project PRISM executes neural projections through a proprietary discrete computing framework.
By eliminating the need for floating-point matrix multiplications, the PRISM runtime achieves dramatic efficiency gains:
- Neural projections evaluate entirely through lightweight, single-cycle logic operations.
- Hardware multipliers are completely bypassed, drastically reducing silicon footprint and thermal dissipation.
- Proprietary signal preservation ensures that models retain high-level semantic nuance, reasoning capability, and grammatical structure without traditional quantization collapse.
The result is foundation-class model capability operating on a fraction of the silicon area, memory bandwidth, and electrical power.
III. Empirical Verification: Google Gemma 2 2B
To verify that the PRISM architecture preserves genuine conversational and reasoning capability, we deployed the system against Google’s open-weights Gemma 2 2B Instruct model.
All 26 layers comprising 182 projection matrices were converted into Project PRISM’s multiplier-free format:
- Linear Projections: 182 discrete projections (100% projection coverage).
- Hardware Multipliers Used: Exactly 0.
- Raw Weight Footprint: Reduced from 4.05 GB to 759 MB (an 81.3% reduction).
- Total Model Package: Reduced from 5.23 GB to 1.41 GB (a 73.0% reduction).
- Active VRAM Usage: 3.27 GB on a standard 6GB laptop GPU, leaving 2.87 GB of free memory headroom.
- Conversational Fluency: Fully preserved across complex multi-turn technical, mathematical, and open-ended dialogue.
During live dialogue testing on a commercial 40-Watt laptop GPU, the converted model generated contextually aware, grammatically complete prose, demonstrating that hardware multipliers are not a requirement for intelligence.
IV. Physical Silicon & Optimization Benchmarks
The computational principles underlying Project PRISM were validated through physical silicon telemetry and standardized optimization gauntlets.
1. Room-Temperature FPGA Telemetry
A physical PRISM core was synthesized onto a Lattice ECP5 FPGA:
- Silicon Multipliers Used: 0 (synthesized purely from standard logic gates and registers).
- Thermal Performance: Fully functional at ambient room temperature (300 K) with passive cooling.
- Empirical Speedup: Evaluated operations at a 10,871x acceleration over standard CPU baselines with a verified 2,170,000x reduction in energy consumption per evaluated state.
2. High-Complexity Landscape Traversal
To evaluate global optimization capabilities, Project PRISM was benchmarked against the 128-variable frustrated energy spike landscape:
- The Classical Bound: Under thermal activation laws, classical supercomputers require more than 12 million times the age of the universe (over 1.74 x 10¹⁷ years) to locate the global optimum. Classical algorithms remained permanently trapped in local minima.
- The Cryogenic Quantum Bound: Cryogenic quantum annealers experience severe freezeout on wide barriers because their operational energy gap collapses below the refrigerator’s thermal noise floor.
- Project PRISM: Traversed the landscape and converged to the verified ground state in 0.492 milliseconds on standard laptop silicon.
V. Beyond the Transformer: Constant-Memory State
In standard transformer architectures, memory consumption expands with every generated word because historical tokens are accumulated in an expanding memory cache. This creates an unsustainable memory bottleneck for long-document processing and persistent agentic workflows.
In Project PRISM, we evaluated an alternative: a proprietary, constant-memory state architecture:
- Context is maintained not as an expanding list of stored tokens, but as a fixed-size internal dynamic state.
- In physical testing on Gemma 2B, the context footprint across all 26 layers was bounded to under 7 Megabytes — a footprint that remains static regardless of sequence length.
This confirms that future foundation models can achieve persistent, long-horizon reasoning within a fixed memory envelope.
VI. Commercial & Strategic Horizon
Project PRISM demonstrates that high-performance artificial intelligence does not require massive datacenter infrastructure or complex cryogenic cooling.
Mage’s Guild Psychonautics is advancing two strategic deployment tracks:
1. Edge Deployment Engines: Transitioning foundation-class models to compact, multiplier-free architectures that execute locally on consumer laptops, autonomous vehicles, and low-power embedded edge devices.
2. High-Speed Classical Co-Processing: Providing sub-microsecond classical co-processing to resolve decoding and control bottlenecks in advanced computing hardware.
